Women in Travel Retail (WiTR) held its annual meeting at TFWA World Exhibition & Conference on Tuesday 3rd October 2017, as a networking event and to raise money for the 2017 charitable project of Sunrise, a charity operating in Cambodia, to build and further equip classrooms at Sunrise’s Siem Reap Learning Centre. Sunrise Learning Centre opens the door to the poorest sectors of the community by providing them with the opportunity of gaining the valuable skill of learning a foreign language. These skills empower disadvantaged and vulnerable people to find good jobs in this burgeoning tourist city. “The money that is raised through this event will help children in residential care in Sunrise in Cambodia,” said Geraldine Cox, the founder of Sunrise. “These are children from babies through to 18-year-olds. When they reach 18, one of three things happens to them – they either get a university degree which we pay for their study if they pass grade 12. If they don’t pass grade 12 we give them vocational training or get them a job. Nobody leaves us without a salary or somewhere safe.”
We are pleased to announce WiTR supporters raised a grand total of €19,000 from the raffle, auction and donations. A huge thank you to all that participated in the event!
The Women in Travel Retail (WiTR) meeting at the TFWA Asia Pacific show featured a special address by Geraldine Cox, founder of Sunrise Cambodia, whose work with vulnerable children we have been supporting.
Cox founded Sunrise Cambodia in 1993. Since then she has poured her heart and soul into providing safety, education and a loving home to hundreds of children across Cambodia who have been rescued from physical and sexual abuse, begging rings, trafficking and illegal adoption rackets.
“Sunrise is a haven for them,” says Cox, “There’s a wonderful feeling of family, even those who grow up and leave still keep in touch.” Since Sunrise Cambodia’s centres also provide education to children in the community, its total reach is in the thousands. It is urgently in need of funds to continue the work.

The first WiTR meeting of 2017 took place at the IAADFS Duty Free Show of the Americas, sponsored by Travel Markets Insider’s Lois Pasternak. Edrington WEBB kindly provided the cocktails. A raffle, which raised nearly US$2,000, combined with proceeds from Essence Corp’s fun run/walk at IAADFS will enable WiTR to continue the longstanding sponsorship of a child at the Lycée Jean Baptiste school in Haiti, built and run by Hand in Hand for Haiti.
